Napster Download and Installation

Download Napster and double click on the exe file. It is a fairly straight ahead and painless installation process. After installing the program, you'll need to through a registration setup process. You'll walk through several dialogs that prompt you for information.
  • Line speed: Select one lower than your actual line speed.
  • Proxy server: Leave this field blank if you aren't using a proxy server. If you are, you'd know by now.
  • Select new user, type in a choice of login name, password, and e-mail address. So far, we've not received any spam from or because of Napster, but I'd not advise using your real email address to be safe. It may take a few tries to find a login name that isn't used.
  • UserName: If you've already got an login name and this is a reinstall you can select existing user and reenter your password/email combo to login under that previous name.
  • Optional info: you can leave these boxes blank and it will not effect your account setup.
  • Audio Settings: The default napster mp3 player is pretty lame. Instead point your player at your existing install of Winamp.
  • Upload and Download Paths: Next is the tough two options for new users: "Share my MP3 files under folders" and "Save my new MP3 files in folder". If you don't have any mp3's, you can leave the first blank. We'd advise setting your download directory to some default temp directory so you always know where you new downloads are at. If not, Napster will place under the \Napster directory (not what you want).
  • Shared files. If you have existing MP3's, then point Napster straight at the directory. You do NOT want napster to search your entire hard drive for mp3's. You never know what game or default install of a program installed some lame mp3 - you don't want to share it. It also takes forever for napster to search your hd. Don't be surprised if Napster appears to die or stall during any disk searches - it can be quite slow at doing so.
  • Do I point the share and download at the same directory? No, not advisable. You will run into times where mp3's will not be complete - you don't want to share those files until you have a chance to listen to them first before sharing them.
  • Once, the above is set, then go for the big finish and click ok.
  • Almost all of the above settings can be changed one inside Napster from the File menu and Preferences.
